Celebrating the start of construction
The University of Melbourne and Monash University, with the support of the Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation celebrated the start of construction of the Point Nepean Research and Education Field Station with a Commencement Ceremony on 29 April 2026.
It was a special opportunity to come together at Point Nepean to mark the beginning of this next phase of the project, alongside colleagues, partners and community members who have supported the project along the way.
We extend our sincere thanks to Aunty Sonia Weston for a moving Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony, acknowledging the significance of place and the enduring connection of Bunurong people to Country. We also thank Professor Mark Cassidy (University of Melbourne), Professor Tim Dunne (Monash University), Professor Jordan Nash (Monash University) and Ms Zoe McKenzie MP for their considered contributions.
As we embark on this next stage of development with Kane Constructions, we look forward to seeing the Field Station take shape as an innovative hub for research, education and meaningful connection to the unique environment and cultural significance of Point Nepean.
We also look forward to sharing progress with you at the Point Nepean Portsea Market, later this year.
